Eye Conditions that May Require Surgical Treatments

Your eyes are one of the most important parts of your body, as they allow you to see the world around you. As time goes on, your eyes may start to show signs of age. There’s a range of conditions that can cause problems with your eyes. While eye surgery sounds scary, it may be the only way to repair years of damage. Check out the following section to learn more about eye conditions that can be treated with surgery.

Cataracts: Cataracts occur when the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, leading to blurred vision. While cataracts form gradually and most people don’t even realize their vision is changing, eye surgery may be the only way to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a clear lens implant.

Glaucoma: While there’s a range of different types of glaucoma, they all can damage the optic nerve. Without proper treatment, pressure within the eye will increase, causing blurry vision, eye pain, headaches, and many other types of symptoms. Oftentimes, eye surgery is necessary to help drain fluid, which will reduce eye pressure.

Retinal Diseases: Some common types of retinal conditions are tears, detachments, diabetic retinopathy, epiretinal membrane, and macular degeneration. In some cases, symptoms can be managed with medication. In more severe instances, eye surgery may be necessary to stop or slow disease progression.

Corneal Disorders: While some types of corneal disorders can be treated with medications, severe cases may require eye surgery. Laser treatments can help to reshape the cornea, remove scar tissue, and make vision clearer. If the cornea is unrepairable, then the doctor can remove it and replace it with healthy corneal tissue.
